US Justice Department Unveils Health Care Fraud Crackdown
The 2025 National Health Care Fraud Takedown united federal and state law enforcement bodies across 50 federal districts and 12 state attorneys general offices, according to an official statement from the agency.
Among those charged were doctors, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other certified medical professionals, accused of engaging in a range of fraudulent schemes.
During the coordinated crackdown, authorities confiscated more than USD245 million in cash, luxury cars, cryptocurrency, and various other assets.
The agency noted that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services blocked over USD4 billion in payments tied to false and deceitful claims, "as part of the whole-of-government approach to combating health care fraud."
Additionally, billing privileges for 205 providers were either suspended or revoked in the months preceding the takedown.
Alongside criminal charges, civil allegations were lodged against 20 defendants for suspected fraud totaling USD14.2 million, while civil settlements amounting to USD34.3 million were reached with 106 defendants as part of the operation, according to the statement.
"This record-setting Health Care Fraud Takedown delivers justice to criminal actors who prey upon our most vulnerable citizens," stated Attorney General Pam Bondi.
