Georgian Opposition Parties Declare Election Boycott

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, eight opposition parties in Georgia declared their decision to refrain from participating in the upcoming municipal elections scheduled for October.

The groups — Freedom Square, European Georgia, United National Movement, Strategy Agmashenebeli, Akhali, Girchi - More Freedom, Droa, and the Federalists — issued a collective statement via a Georgian broadcaster.

In their announcement, they described the forthcoming elections as an attempt at "legitimizing an illegal regime."

These political factions also vowed to persist in their "resistance efforts towards eliminating the oligarchic system," signaling ongoing opposition to the current ruling establishment.

Widespread demonstrations broke out in Georgia in May 2024, triggered by the introduction of a controversial "foreign agents" law.

Both the EU and US condemned the Georgian government's handling of the situation.

During the unrest, the governing Georgian Dream party accused Western powers of supporting a plot to instigate revolution in the country.

Public protests carried on into the previous autumn, fueled by Georgian Dream's success in parliamentary elections — results the opposition labeled as fraudulent.
