Laos tackles health challenges posed by climate change with new initiative

(MENAFN) Laos has launched a new initiative aimed at reinforcing its health system to better withstand the growing health challenges posed by climate change.

The project, which began on Tuesday, focuses on building community-level capacity to manage the health impacts linked to climate-related issues such as extreme weather, water-borne diseases, and poor sanitation.

According to the Center of Information and Education for Health under the Lao Ministry of Health, the project will help bolster climate resilience by improving the use of climate data, as well as water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) indicators, across 25 climate-vulnerable districts. These tools will help health authorities monitor climate risks and respond more effectively.

The initiative also includes upgrading 79 health facilities across the country and providing training to healthcare workers. Officials have reviewed project goals, implementation strategies, and monitoring frameworks, emphasizing the importance of coordination and accountability throughout the project’s lifecycle.

The project reflects a growing effort by Laos to integrate climate adaptation into public health planning and infrastructure.
