California Governor Suggests Redistricting Shift
Speaking with a group of Democratic officials from Texas who were visiting, Newsom emphasized that California—widely regarded as a Democratic bastion and the state with the most representatives in Congress—might ask its voters to restore redistricting control to the state’s legislature.
This would reverse a 2008 measure that had handed the responsibility to an impartial citizens' panel.
“This is a break-the-glass moment,” Newsom said during a press briefing at the Sacramento governor’s residence.
“Everything is on the line.”
The Democratic leader explained that his viewpoint shifted following reports that U.S. President Donald Trump had contacted Texas Governor Greg Abbott to advocate for the creation of five additional Republican congressional districts in preparation for the 2026 midterms.
Since then, Texas has begun revising its district lines through an extraordinary legislative session.
Newsom accused Republicans of discarding democratic traditions, pointing to what he described as tactics aimed at skewing the redistricting process to benefit their party.
“They don't even want to play by the same set of rules. … They just want to throw the entire board,” he remarked.
He cautioned that the outcome of the next presidential contest could be in jeopardy if Democrats fail to react with urgency, describing the moment as “a fire alarm for democracy.”
