Japan Scales Back Tsunami Alerts

(MENAFN) Japan’s Meteorological Agency has downgraded tsunami warnings to advisories along the Pacific coastlines of Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, following a major earthquake that struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula earlier Wednesday.

The advisory previously issued for Okayama Prefecture has been lifted. However, coastal advisories remain active from Hokkaido down through Okinawa.

Authorities are continuing to strongly advise the public to stay clear of shorelines and river mouths, cautioning that elevated sea levels may persist for at least another 24 hours.

Wave heights of up to 1.3 meters were observed at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture on Wednesday.

The revised advisories came after an initial full-scale tsunami alert was issued in response to the powerful offshore quake.
