Floods Force Thousands to Evacuate Malaysia's Eastern Sabah Province
The State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat reported that the number of displaced flood victims climbed to 4,652 by Saturday evening, according to a state-run news agency.
The crisis has begun spilling across provincial borders. In the neighboring eastern state of Sarawak, authorities evacuated 63 individuals to an emergency relief center as conditions there also deteriorated.
The unfolding disaster had been flagged days earlier. The Malaysian Meteorological Department warned last Wednesday that persistently humid conditions would grip both Sabah and Sarawak throughout the week, with widespread rainfall forecast across multiple areas following the onset of monsoon winds.
